Taking Your Values Along for the Ride

Planning a great trip takes more than packing a good map and gassing up the car. To make sure you get the most out of the experience you need to take the time to think about what you want from it. Identifying your values and planning a trip that recognizes and supports them will help you create the trip of a lifetime.

When you're heading out on the road, some of the things you might value include:

  • meeting people
  • learning about different cultures
  • being independent
  • working as team with your travel mates
  • discovering new places
  • leading the group
  • having a structured, well-planned trip
  • having a flexible, relaxed schedule
  • spending time outdoors
  • visiting museums or other attractions
  • getting places quickly
  • having time to explore the side-roads
  • feeling safe and secure at all times
  • being adventurous.

If you recognize your own personal values in advance, you'll be able to plan a trip accordingly, balancing your key values and creating some goals for your trip. Based on your values, your goals might include:

  • to meet as many interesting people as possible
  • to get to know your travel buddies better
  • to visit five different towns and learn about them
  • to feel challenged
  • to enjoy your friends' company
  • to not get a speeding ticket (!)

Knowing what you want to get out of your trip is as important as the ultimate destination. After all, just like life, any good trip is really about enjoying the journey. When you're looking at your career/life plan, thinking about and articulating your values is vital. Many an unhappy soul has found himself or herself in a job that didn't match their core values.

Identifying your values means clarifying what matters most to you. When it comes to career planning, it's important to look at how those values translate into life in the world of work. Whether you value prestige, passion, security, freedom or all of the above, knowing what you care about can help you follow a path that's in line with what means the most to you.
