"Surviving is important. Thriving is elegant."

These words from the famous poet and writer Maya Angelou really capture the essence of what Career Paths 2004 is about: information and inspiration.

We know it's hard to move forward in life without having the basics covered - food, shelter, clothing, transportation, self-knowledge and encouragement - so we collected tools and resources you'll need to survive and meet these needs. We also collected youth stories of survival, to inspire and motivate you to create a life that reflects who you are and what you're passionate about. Because once the basics are taken care of, it's time to thrive.

You told us what you wanted and we've created this issue based on your priorities: taking care of the essentials when life gets difficult, addressing youth employment issues, showcasing the stories of other youth who've made it through tough life transitions and knowing what jobs are out there that you can do right now.

Throughout the production of Career Paths 2004 we talked with youth across BC and the Yukon and heard many life stories, each of them filled with challenges, triumphs, fears, hopes, dreams and plans. The one common thread we found was that no matter what our life situation is, we all want happiness and a good life.

To everyone who told their stories in these pages, you inspired us with your strength, courage, intelligence, power, creativity and vibrant personalities. We hope we can return this inspiration right back to you as you build your life in your own original, elegant style.
